Faith: Scriptures say to bridle your tongue

By Staff

Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. (James 3:2 NLT)

Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. (Proverbs 10:19 NLT)

Both of these Scriptures are definite words to live by. The tongue is a small thing, but what enormous damage it can do. The tongue is full of wickedness and can ruin your life.

How often do we speak before thinking of the consequences of our words? We’ve all had negative, offensive words spoken about us at some time that we’ve never forgotten. We may forgive, but it’s nearly impossible to forget. Words pierce our minds and hearts. They shape our egos and impact our ways of thinking. For these reasons, it’s important to weigh our words wisely.

Gossip and lying are two very hurtful acts. I’m reminded of the seven things the Lord hates, and some of them are a lying tongue, a heart that devises evil, feet swift to run to mischief (gossip), and sowing discord among the brethren – all of which are acts that can be made by an unbridled tongue. These are not just sins; the Lord hates them.

Do not bear false witness against thy neighbor and don’t use the name of the Lord our God in vain are two of the Ten Commandments. Both are products of an unbridled tongue. When we can get our mouth under subjection of God’s Spirit, how much better off will we become?

In Matthew, Christ tells the people if your eye causes you to lust, gouge it out, for it is better to lose your eye than to go to hell. Is the tongue any different? It is important, even vital, to use our mouths for praise, prayer, encouragement, witnessing, rebuking the enemy and appropriate conversation, but we must omit the lies, gossip, bitter words, negativity and offensive language.
