A plate of chocolate chip cookies took first place at the Coffeyville, Kansas county fair.

Every year for 105 years now, our small town of Coffeyville, Kansas, holds a fair and rodeo. The festivities include something for everyone — a parade, a carnival, an exhibit hall and a rodeo.

My favorite part of the fair is the exhibit hall, where participants can enter and display just about anything they have made or raised, from produce to jellies and jams or crocheted or knitted items to quilted bedspreads, and anything in between. The chance of winning a ribbon is exciting.

I’ve entered a number of needlework, knitted, crocheted and embroidered items, and I’ve won my share of ribbons, including a couple of purple grand champion ribbons. However, the best category to enter is the culinary department, where folks enter cakes, pies, breads and cookies. You can take home some money if your dish wins first place, because all first-place items in the culinary category are auctioned off — and they sometimes fetch a nice amount of cash.

Last year I selected a recipe for chocolate chip cookies and one for pineapple upside-down cake. I made and entered both, and both won first place; I received a check for more than $100 after they were auctioned off.

It’s time to sort through my stash of recipes to find something that just might earn me first-place bragging rights again this year.
