A turkey joke goes awry.

My best prank took place in the late 1940s, when I was 14 years old working at my first job, at the local five-and-dime store. It was the week before Christmas, and the shopping area was abuzz.

The department store in the area had given all its employees a turkey for Christmas. Before long, all the local stores were doing the same. Well, not all the stores. The five-and-dime store where I worked was owned by a thrifty man, and we all knew there would be no turkey bonus given to us.

Talked-about turkey joke

I was the newest worker at the five-and-dime store, and I was the object of many practical jokes. So, when I forgot to put my shoes in my locker and someone nailed them to the floor that was the last straw. I went to the butcher shop and got two of the biggest turkey legs he had. I then filled the big brown bag the turkey legs came in with newspaper. Next I tied the turkey legs so they were sticking out of the bag.

This was a Wednesday, which was my day off, but which was also payday. I went to the five-and-dime store and slipped into the back entrance with my bag of turkey legs. I picked up my check, and then proceeded to run up and down the aisles, smiling and holding my “turkey” aloft for everyone to see. All of the employees assumed we were getting a bonus turkey.

I later found out that the manager almost had a riot on his hands when it was announced that there were no bonus turkeys being handed out.
