First published in 1997, Heirloom Vegetable Gardening: A Master Gardener's Guide to Planting, Seed Saving and Cultural History has been out of print, and MOTHER EARTH NEWS is proud to present the original text, together with 100 color photos in this e-book edition.

This remarkable e-book is the bible for gardeners who choose to explore the fabulous flavors, fascinating history and astonishing diversity of vegetables. Food historian William Woys Weaver profiles 280 heirloom varieties, providing recipes, growing advice and authoritative history. The fruit of his labor is a terrific reference for the kitchen gardener, the cook, the historian, and anyone who might wonder what our ancestors were up to when they sat down to eat. Weaver also raises the questions of where our food is headed and what we, as individuals, can do.

Weaver traces the development of the seed-saving movement and gives a list of commercial seed and plant stock sources. Heirloom Vegetable Gardening covers everything from artichokes and cardoons to potatoes and tomatoes. Read about the Golden Ball carrot, which was developed for cold frames in the 19th century. Learn the rich history of lettuces still around today such as the Brown Dutch or White-Seeded Simpson. Discover how to plant, grow and harvest crosnes (or Vegetable White Bait as it was once called).

Want to grow the famous Moon and Stars watermelon? Want to make a Parsnip Pie? Want to learn how to preserve the treasure that is heirloom seeds? This is the e-book that will tell you how!

In 2003, we introduced an archive of all MOTHER EARTH NEWS' issues from the 1970s on CD-ROM, presenting a new way of accessing past issues of the magazine in a digital environment. Thousands of readers responded to the notion of being able to sift through our first decade at the click of a mouse, and to the ability to search for what specifically interested them.

Following that success, we continued to expand the archive to cover more of the magazine's past issues on disc. Most recently, we introduced the Multiplatform Edition, which makes the magazine content available not just on desktop and laptop computers, but also via smartphones and the multitude of portable reading devices that have become so ubiquitous. Now, we are pleased to reintroduce the classic version of the archive, for the first time with enhanced search functionality across MOTHER's entire 44-year history. With this version of the archive, you can search for articles about earth-sheltered homes, cheap solar power, organic gardening techniques, raising chickens, beekeeping, do-it-yourself projects and much more.

MOTHER EARTH NEWS has also published hundreds of healthy, down-to-earth recipes, and the archive includes all the delicious directions we've published in the magazine. From strawberry jam and homemade jerky to hummus and morel mushroom quiche, you'll find something to satisfy every appetite.

Find almost every story, tip and technique published in the magazine and online from 1970-2013 - more than 10,000 articles.

Confused about the difference between our two archive products? - These are the key distinctions:

  • The Multiplatform Edition contains files for each year of the magazine in a format that can be transferred for viewing and searching on multiple devices. The content can only be viewed and searched year by year.
  • The Classic Edition provides a browser-based interface for accessing the archive on your desktop computer or laptop. You can do advanced searches and view content from the entire 44-year archive, all at once!
