Healthier Alternatives

To make breads healthier, there are a couple of things you can do.

You can start by skipping the all-purpose flour in a recipe. Either substitute it with whole-wheat flour or whole-wheat pastry flour. Whole-wheat pastry flour is made from soft wheat berries, which gives baked products a lighter texture.

Secondly, you can use a natural sweetener in place of all or part of the sugar. Great alternatives include honey, maple syrup, puréed fruit, applesauce and fruit juice concentrate.

A quick online search for flour and sugar substitutions and amounts will have you baking healthier breads in no time.
