Time to Put the Peas In

Erin SheehanDo you have your peas in yet? If not, time to hit your garden plot. Growing peas is easy and rewarding – they are the perfect early crop. Peas like cool temperatures, and, luckily, snow is no problem for them. Peas stop producing once the temperatures get up around 70 F, so the earlier you can get them planted the better. We’re about two weeks behind this year on account of our hard winter and cold spring, but still hopeful that we’ll have enough time to bring in a good harvest before it gets too hot. We put ours in a few days ago and last night we got snow, but that's OK. Snow is good fertilizer for peas. 




There are three kinds of peas: snap, shell and snow. Snap and snow have edible pods, which means no shelling. Jim and I grow snap peas because we like them, and, well, neither of us really likes shelling peas. I think both of us have childhood memories of seemingly never-ending pea-shelling! But fortunately we love the taste of snap peas. Fresh picked and steamed, they melt like butter in your mouth. Even flash-frozen, last year’s peas tasted delicious out of the chest freezer right up until last month when our supply ran out.

Peas are a relatively low-maintenance crop. They do need full sun, but do not need fertilizer. You’ll have to watch the watering – they need enough to germinate but not so much water that they rot. We put up a 5-foot fence for the peas to climb. Most years they climb right on up over the fence and down the other side. You can plant peas along your garden fence but you run the risk of animals eating your peas from outside the fence, and it’s also going to be a lot of weight on your fence. Pea plants get huge!

Hi Dave - thanks for the comment. I do remember your mulching project. All that work has paid off in spades for you! Now it's time to reap the bounty of all those leaves. Snap peas are so easy to grow and so delicious. They taste like BUTTER! I swear. They are even good frozen, incredibly. Give it a try and blog about how it goes!

Erin, my early life pea memories are much like yours. Lots of work with little to show for it. Hours of pea shelling produced very few pints of peas. That was before the edible pod peas. You have given me hope that there might be a place in my garden for peas once again. My grandson does like the edible pod peas so I'm thinking it could be a good thing to grow. It all depends on how much the groundhogs like peas as to how many will be harvested. I'm in the process of hogging out 30 foot rows through the deep mulch from last fall. You will probably remember last fall I foraged the neighborhood to acquire almost 1000 bags of yard waste to cover the garden (Terra Nova Gardens). It has been reduced down to about six to eight inches over the winter. Now I am slicing through the mulch with a spade down to the soil under the mulch. A six in wide trough is the result. The weed/grass under the mulch is being chopped out with a mattock pick axe leaving a trench about eight inches deep and six inches wide. Once the rows are finished the trenches will be filled up with soil and perhaps with some additives such as peat, perlite, a bit of lime and a handful of Epsom salts. It's allot of work but once the rows are done, I shouldn't have to do much for the next few years. I'm thinking maybe I'll try a couple rows of peas this year.
