Propane or charcoal, which do you prefer? Persoally, I don’t have a preference. I really don’t. Now, if you ask me which I use the most, it’s charcoal. I’m not sure why. It’s just how thing worked out.
Honestly, I haven’t owned a propane grill in years. The one that used to be at home saw many years of use. It even got used a few times in winter. Not that I actually used it myself. David, my step dad, was the primary grill person with the propane grill. Finally the burners quit working and rust overtook the old thing, so it went to “grill heaven”, or wherever it is that worn out grills go to.
It was replaced by a Brinkman smoker and then a Weber grill. The very first time David used the smoker, he bought several bags of hickory chips. David used the all, no charcoal. The meat definatly had that hickory taste to it. Not very tasty for us, but for some reason, my parrot Bogie loved it. It was one of those “duh” moments when the salesman informed David afterwards that you have to use the charcoal and just a little wood chips. To this day, I won’t let him forget it. I also think this is why I am now the grill master at home, regardless if it’s with the smoker or grill.
The Weber grill is one of those small table top charcoal grills. It’s gone on several camping trips with us. For two people, it’s the perfect size. Once in a while, David will light the charcoal for me, but for the most part, I enjoy doing it myself.
So here’s my next question. What’s you’re favorite meat to grill? For David, it’s burgers and brats. The bigger the brats, the better. For myself, it’s burgers and a nice juicy steak if I’m using the grill. If I’m using the smoker, sometimes I will do a roast, sometimes I roast chicken.
this year, I think I’m going to try to expand my horizions just a little bit. I’ve never tried to grill a kabob or roasted an ear of corn on the grill before. I also noticed a book in one of the local stores that’s all about grilling pizzas. With Memorial Day just around the corner, I think it’s time to grab a bag of charcoal.
