Take a plain wooden shelf from blah to beautiful with a coat of chalk paint.

Are you a flea market and yard sale enthusiast who buys old relics with the intention of doing “something” with them? Do you have a basement chock-full of old picture frames, jars, bowls, shelves, end tables and more — and you’re not sure what to do with it any of it? I did … and then I discovered chalk paint.

I have never been a big fan of painting projects, but then a friend told me about chalk paint. I read up on it, and it looked pretty simple, so I decided to try it. Now I’m hooked. I love the way the paint looks when it dries, and there are so many things you can do with it, from layering colors and distressing to using stencils.

Chalk paint can be used on almost any surface, including wood, terra cotta, metal, ceramic, canvas, fabric and wicker. The possibilities are endless, and an added bonus is that painting with chalk paint requires very little preparation — no sanding, stripping or priming your project. All you need to do is clean the surface with glass cleaner to remove any dirt and dust, and you’re ready to start. For glass and ceramic items, use rubbing alcohol instead of glass cleaner.

Following are a few fun projects for beginners. For more craft projects using chalk paint, including a selection of more advanced projects, visit PlaidOnline.com. Have fun!
