Knit A Handmade Cable Cowl and Wristers

Convert any shirt into a turtleneck with this cozy cowl. The stylish wristers make it easy to keep your fingers and wrists warm. Coordinate with style!

What’s Needed:

  • Knitting Loom: 8 Zippy Looms + 4 Zippy Corners, 36 pegs total
  • Yarn: Approx 180 yds (165m) super-bulky or jumbo yarn. (Sample uses Malabrigo Rasta in Plomo.)
  • Notions: Knitting tool, crochet hook, scissors, cable needle.

Special Stitches You’ll Need

Skip With Yarn To Back (SL1WYB)

Skip 1 peg with yarn toward the back of the peg.

Cable 1 Over 2 Left (C1 Over 2 Left)

Skip peg 1 with yarn behind peg; knit peg 2 and peg 3. Place loop from peg 2 and peg 3 on cable needle; hold cable needle to the center of the knitting loom. Take working yarn to the front of peg 1. Knit peg 1. Move loop from peg 1 to peg 3. Place loops from cable needle on peg 1 and peg 2.

Gently tug on the loop on peg 2, then on the loop on peg 3— this removes yarn slack from the sts.

Cable 1 Over 2 Right (C1 Over 2 Right)

Place loops from peg 1 and peg 2 on cable needle; hold cable needle to the center of the knitting loom. Knit peg 3. Place loop from peg 3 on peg 1. Place sts from cable needle on peg 2 and peg 3. Knit peg 2, then knit peg 3. Gently tug on the loop on peg 2, then on the loop on peg 3—this removes yarn slack from the sts.

Instructions:

Cowl

  1. Assemble 8 Zippy Looms + 4 Zippy Corners (36 pegs total). CO 36 sts; prepare to work in the round.
  2. Rnds 1–6: K2, p2, k3, p2, k to end.
  3. Rnds 7–8: K2, p2, k2, sl1wyb, p2, k to end.
  4. Rnd 9: K2, p2, c1 over 2 left, p2, k to end.
  5. Rnd 10: K2, p2, k3, p2, k to end. Rep rnds 7–10, 4 more times.
  6. Rep rnds 1–6.
  7. Bind off with Basic Bind Off method (page 17).
  8. Weave ends in. Block lightly.

Right Hand Wrister

  1. CO 15 sts; prepare to work a flat panel.
  2. Row 1, 3, 5: K6, p2, k3, p2, k2.
  3. Row 2, 4, 6: K2, p2, k3, p2, k6.
  4. Row 7: K6, p2, sl1wyb, k2, p2, k2.
  5. Row 8: K2, p2, k2, sl1wyb, p2, k6.
  6. Row 9: K6, p2, c1 over 2 left, p2, k2.
  7. Row 10: K2, p2, k3, p2, k6.
  8. Rep rows 7–10, 2 more times.
  9. Next row: K6, p2, k3, p2, k2.
  10. Next row: K2, p2, k3, p2, k6.
  11. Bind off with Basic Bind Off method.
  12. Weave ends in (page 19).
  13. Block lightly.

Seaming

  1. Fold vertically and begin a mattress stitch seam from the cast-on edge up the side, stopping about 3″ (8cm) from the bind-off edge. Begin mattress stitching at the bind-off edge and seam down about 1″ (3cm), thus leaving an opening for the thumb.

Left Hand Wrister

  1. CO 15 sts; prepare to work a flat panel.
  2. Row 1, 3, 5: K2, p2, k3, p2, k6.
  3. Row 2, 4, 6: K6, p2, k3, p2, k2.
  4. Row 7: K2, p2, k2, sl1wyb, p2, k6.
