Buttermilk Brownies Recipe

These old-fashioned brownies with chopped walnuts are rich and delicious topped with a scoop of ice cream.

• 2 cups flour
• 2 cups sugar
• 4 tablespoons cocoa
• 1 cup cold water
• 1 stick butter
• 1⁄2 cup oil
• 1⁄2 cup buttermilk
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 2 eggs
• 1⁄2 cup chopped walnuts, optional
• Ice cream or whipped topping, optional


1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Grease a jellyroll pan; set aside.

2. Into a large bowl, sift flour, sugar, and cocoa. Whisk or mix with a fork to combine. Set aside.

3. In a saucepan, bring water, butter, and oil to a boil. Pour over sifted ingredients, and beat with an electric mixer until creamy.

4. Add buttermilk, baking soda, eggs, and walnuts, if using, and beat until thoroughly combined.

5. Spread batter in prepared pan, and bake for about 18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

6. Serve brownies warm or at room temperature, topped with ice cream or whipped topping, if desired.
