Who doesn’t appreciate a piping hot loaf of bread, especially this time of year, when there’s a chill in the air? The problem a lot of us have with baking homemade bread is that it’s time-consuming. For folks who just don’t have the time to wait for yeast bread to rise, quick breads are a great alternative — and they’re just as delicious.

Consider baking one of the following quick breads for the upcoming holidays. You can bake these breads up to three weeks in advance, and freeze them until needed.

Healthier Alternatives

To make breads healthier, there are a couple of things you can do.

You can start by skipping the all-purpose flour in a recipe. Either substitute it with whole-wheat flour or whole-wheat pastry flour. Whole-wheat pastry flour is made from soft wheat berries, which gives baked products a lighter texture.

Secondly, you can use a natural sweetener in place of all or part of the sugar. Great alternatives include honey, maple syrup, puréed fruit, applesauce and fruit juice concentrate.
