Easy Homemade Barbecue Sauce

Yields about 1 1/2 cups

Homemade barbecue sauce is a real treat. Make it whenever you barbecue or smoke beef, pork or chicken; its complex, rich, sweet flavor marries well with the meat. It’s also delicious on pizza, topped with onions, cheddar cheese and cilantro. It takes just 20 minutes from start to finish, including 15 minutes of cook time, and the result is truly fantastic.

3⁄4 cup tomato purée (sold as heavy purée)
1⁄4 cup pure maple syrup
3 tablespoons molasses
3 tablespoons organic ketchup
3 tablespoons malt vinegar
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1⁄2 teaspoon smoked paprika
Sea salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Combine all ingredients in saucepan. Heat to boiling over medium heat. Reduce heat and simmer gently for 15 minutes, or until reduced and thickened slightly. Taste, and season with additional salt and pepper, if necessary.

Store in airtight glass jar or bottle in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
