Winter Weather Brings Out the Kid Within

As a youngster, winter weather is a welcomed sight, and one that provides a lot of outside entertainment.

I think we all have a love-hate relationship with snow. Well, unless you’re a child, and then winter weather — fresh and cold snow falling from the sky — is great. It was especially wonderful for me as a child growing up in Texas, where we always got a day or two off from school. We lived in Little Rock, Arkansas, before moving to Texas, back before I was old enough to go to school, so I got to play in the snow a lot. What a blast that was!

Sometimes it’s fun now, but not always. If it snows when I’m off of work, that’s fine, but it’s not so fine if I have to drive in it — the older I get anyway, the more fearful I am. When I was younger, driving in snow was actually kind of thrilling. It was fun to slip and slide.

Here in Texas, we’ve had a white Christmas the past two years, and that was nice. That’s something that’s almost unheard of here, although it does snow a lot in the Texas Panhandle.

There’s no way to deny loving the beauty of snow, but I’m not enough of a fan to try and live where it snows half the year. I know many folks from the north who venture to Texas for the winter, and they sure don’t seem to miss the snow.

So here’s my theory: Snow is simply for the kid in all of us!
